Artist's Note:
I wanted to paint another tiger, but this time I wanted to showcase the power and threat of these animals in a different way. So this tiger, stalking and sizing up its prey before it pounces, was the perfect choice. This species is found on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, and is the only species of tiger in that region having survived where the Bali and Javan tigers have unfortunately become extinct. While not as large as the Siberian tiger, the Sumatran tiger is still a massive animal, of ferocious power. The largest of them are over 2.5m long, and weigh in at up to 140kg. They live in small groups scattered across Sumatra, in a region of 140 226km2, although the individual regions they occupy in this area are about 250km2 each (there are 27 of these sub-regions).
I think this painting has been successful in portraying the sence of menace and ferocious power that tigers give off. In this case I removed out the background from the foliage in the original reference as I felt it detracted from the focus on the big cat. The black background was also more aesthetically pleasing as it kept the colour scheme to the minimum of that of the animal itself. For more info on the Sumatran tiger, see here.
