Artist's Note:
After painting a tiny creature with the Red-Eyed Green Tree Frog I wanted to paint something massive and powerful. A Siberian Tiger seemed a solid choice. These animals are enormous, larger than other types of tigers. They measure up to 10 feet long from the tip of their nose to the end of their tail. They weigh up to around 300kg. There aren’t many land animals that are larger. This struck me as a perfect followup to the 15g tree frog. In much the same way as the frog was saying “get off my leaf”, this tiger’s expression said to me “this land is mine”. The cold, calm threat that it gives off is fabulously imposing, and I wanted to try and capture a sense of its power.
This painting also marked the end of my time using Corel Painter as my primary painting tool, a space it had held for well over a decade. For more info on these fearsome creatures, see here.
