Artist's Note:

My goal with this piece was to study things like transluscent materials, texture changes, etc., and to paint less close-cropped portrait than the last one. It was a longer, and more involved process (though nowhere near that of My Friend Fatso), as I kept trying to refine it more and more.

One of the most complex parts of the painting turned out to be the back seats of the car in the background, along with the rear windshield and the reflections. I found this section to be a particular challenge when trying to work out exactly what I was looking at in order to shape the painting properly.

Regarding the portrait itself, it was very interesting studying the light and tonal changes across the folds in the blouse, and translating what I could see to the painting. The angle of the model’s face to the camera also provided an interesting challenge to overcome given my lack of practical experience painting humans. The face really is much more complex than we give it credit for as we usually only face people from certain angles. Just being slightly outside of what we are used to looking at, someone’s face can appear remarkably different.

Not sure what’s next.  One thing’s for sure, I need to improve my skills when it comes to titling paintings.  Woman & Car is unimaginative, and doesn’t really do the painting justice, but it is what it is.
